SAN ANTONIO - Two San Antonio councilwomen have a message for everyone heading into the Thanksgiving holiday to be safe and smart amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
“COVID is still out there and we’re trying to remind everyone to stay alert,” District Four Councilwoman Dr. Adriana Rocha Garcia said.

Thanksgiving is around the corner and this year instead of the typical large gatherings and shared food.

District Four and Five Councilwomen Rocha Garcia and Shirley Gonzales are encouraging you to think about your safest option to help keep COVID-19 at bay.
Both districts make up much of the West and Southwest part of town and have more multi-generational homes as well as people who work front line jobs, which can put them at a higher risk of catching the virus.
“Recent numbers for District Four show unfortunately we’re still second highest number in cases,” Dr. Rocha Garcia said.
6,671 COVID-19 cases at the district’s latest update.
District Five also is seeing high numbers.
“We were at the highest rate of infection and also fatalities,” Gonzales said.

Both Councilwomen are working to reverse the spike. District Four has actually seen a nearly 10 percent decrease after a month of active messaging.
District Five has PPE available for those who need it and can help you find a testing site.
“Just take advantage of the testing sites,” Gonzales said.
Stopping the spread is a personal fight for both women as they themselves have lost family members to COVID-19.
Dr. Rocha Garcia tragically lost seven family members to the virus and Gonzales recently lost a family member as well.
Both call it a harsh reminder of the pandemic’s reality even amid the holiday season.
“Having to stay separated during these times is really hard for us but we’ve got to keep it up,” Gonzales said.
“This virus has names. This virus has people you may not know but you probably know someone whose family has been affected,” Rocha Garcia said.
